Laser scanners have been available for some time, but all require the need for an external positioning device, such as a portable measuring arm. This severely restricts the measuring capabilities of the system, as multiple setups are required, involving masses of post-processing to connect together the separate scans.
The HandyScan3D family of scanners is completely different - it is the only self-positioning, hand-held laser scanner for digitising, reverse engineering & inspection applications. There is absolutely no need for a measuring arm or any other kind of measuring device. The user can even move the object while it is being scanned !
Developed by Creaform Inc., a Canadian specialist in 3D digitising for many years, this new generation of 3D laser scanner provides companies in the field of design, multimedia, engineering and medical (plus many others), the possibility to conveniently digitize any physical objects and convert them into a 3D digital format.

The scanning is a simple process, which is realised by sweeping over the part a laser light emitted by the camera. The operation is contact-free and provides a real time 3D rendering. Once the 3D file is obtained, it can be modified as required which greatly reduces the cycle of product development. The scanner can be used for measurement and dimensional control system as well.
The digitizing is realized with a unique laser cross that measures through two digital cameras integrated in the scanner’s head. This patented concept also permits to mesh the 3D model obtained, which provides a superior surface quality with high precision.
